Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, for Elizabeth Gertrude "Betty" Christensen, 96, Vermillion, former Madison resident, who died on July 31, 2010, at Sanford Vermillion Care Center. The services were held in the Randall Funeral Home at Madison, and burial was in Graceland Cemetery, Madison.
Visitation began at noon on Wednesday until the time of service.
Elizabeth Gertrude Kuchenbecker was born May 11, 1914, in Madison, the daughter of John and Clara (McBride) Kuchenbecker. She graduated from Madison High School in Madison in 1935.
On Feb. 1, 1936, she married Merle E. Christensen of Madison in a double wedding ceremony with Lawrence and Evelyn Hidenshield. They lived and worked in the Madison area most of their lives. Elizabeth (Betty) was employed and retired from JC Penney
She was a member of the Sprouts Garden Club and Sandpipers Club for many years. Her greatest enjoyment was family, friends and gardening. The grandchildren and great-grandchildren always delighted in going to her home to enjoy a feast of goulash and homemade buns. Nature and working in her garden and flowers were her enjoyment. She was artistic and enjoyed oil paint.
Elizabeth's memory is cherished by her daughter, Janice (Donald) Emmick of Vermillion; two grandchildren and their families, Holly (Kevin) Annis of Vermillion, their children, Kristine (Jacob) Stout of Lincoln, NE, Ryan and Tyler Annis of Yankton, and Trudy Hill and daughter, Jade, from Rapid City; one brother, John (Gladys) Kuchenbecker of Gettysburg; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 2002; three sisters; and two brothers.
