Russel "Bud" Malthesen, 73, of Vermillion, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010 at his residence after a battle with cancer. Bud was born June 23, 1937, in Chester, to Harold and Phyliss (Limmer) Malthesen. He graduated from Chester High School in 1956, and joined the US Air Force, serving for four years.
He married Mary Jane Harden on July 1, 1961, in Vermillion, and after the service, he worked as a Telephone Tech for Qwest and also a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, retiring in 1997. After retirement, he worked part time at Meckling Fertilizer and Ag-Op in Vermillion.
His favorite pastime was working on cars, watching Nascar, collecting model cars and attending car shows. He was a faithful member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Vermillion, and at one time St. John's Lutheran Church in Yankton.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Darrell.
Bud is survived by his wife, Mary Jane of Vermillion; two daughters, Michelle (Duane) Johnson of Vermillion, Jennifer (Jeff) Huska of Windom, MN; and a sister, Beverly (Jake) Blackstone of Canton. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Amanda (Andrew) Johnson-Ofstehage, Tyler Johnson, Sam, Kaitlee and Charlee Huska; three nieces and two nephews.
