The Vermillion boys golf team completed a season-opening stretch of three meets within three days last week at Dakota Valley's invitational tournament. Next in line on the Tanager schedule will be Harrisburg's invitational next Tuesday, Aug. 31.
The host Panthers claimed the team title with a 301 score, besting Harrisburg by seven and Dell Rapids by eight strokes. The Tanagers had a 360 score.
Mitch Nelson was Vermillion's low man for the day with a 40 going out and a 41 coming back for an 81 total. Carter Andre had 89, Zach McDonald 93, Mitch Ellison 97 and Jay Munger 120. The meet's best scores were a 67 by Alex Steen, Harrisburg, and a 68 by Taylor White, Dakota Valley.
In the JV division of the meet Vermillion had a 246 team score. Paul Schwasinger shot a 52, Nick Johnson and Sam Craig 61s, and Tristen Meadows 72.
By a slim three-stroke margin Beresford edged Vermillion in a boys golf dual at The Bluffs. The Tanagers' Mitch Nelson and the Watchdogs' Jason Strand tied for the day's best score with 44s. Zach McDonald and Mitch Ellison chimed in with 47s, Peter Haught carded a 51 and Carter Andre a 52 for Vermillion. Meanwhile, the other Watchdog scores were Taylor Jensen's 45, Kevin Hyronimus' 47, Nick Anderson's 50 and Kory Diefendorf's 51.
The Tanagers opened the season at West Central's invitational. In a 17-team field Vermillion placed 14th with a team score of 392.
Sioux Falls Christian captured the team title with a 315 total, followed in the top five by Dakota Valley at 318, Dell Rapids at 320, Madison at 334 and the host school at 336.
McDonald, the only senior on Coach Kirk Hogen's squad this fall, had his team's best score. He had a 45 going out and a 44 coming in for an 89, good for 41st place. Ellison carded a 44-47=91 round while Andre was a stroke back at 44-48=92. Those men placed 48th and 49th, respectively. Rounding out the Vermillion team's scores was Haught in 83rd place with a pair of 60s good for a 120.
