The Meckling Livestock 4-H Club had a busy 4-H year. We had a float in October's Dakota Days parade, which also marked National 4-H Week. We also attended a haunted house this month, and donated canned goods as part of the admission.
On Make A Difference Day we raked at the Senior Center, then had a pizza party. In November we raked a lawn for our donation to the After Prom Party fundraiser and contributed to many other causes, including the Giving Tree with our yearly book drive and present, Operation Christmas Child, the St. Agnes Thanksgiving baskets, and landscaping for the Senior Center. Some of our members were able to talk to people in the community as part of the 4-H exhibit at the Harvest Festival Open House.
Our club and members won many awards at our yearly Recognition Event, including Outstanding Club! In December we delivered Meals on Wheels for our usual week over Christmas break, rang bells for the Salvation Army, and put up our club and the county's Christmas trees for the W. H. Over Museum's Christmas Festival.
This year we also organized the kids' crafts at the Festival; that was a lot of fun! We also sent a care package to a soldier in Iraq and donated money for school supplies for orphans in Guatemala.
For Valentine's Day, we made valentines for the veterans in the hospitals in Ft. Meade, Hot Springs, and Sioux Falls. We collected many pairs of shoes for Share Your Sole; these shoes were given to people on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation. We donated another lawn raking to the St. Agnes Classic, and, along with a pair of VHS activity tickets, to the After Prom Party fundraiser.
Our club raised money for 4-H by selling fruit, and donated a box of this fruit to the Vermillion Food Pantry. We played bingo with the residents at the Sanford Care Center, which is always a fun time.
Our club helped run some games at the PTA Carnival. We also cleaned the ditches of Clay County Park Road and the hill of Bluff View Cemetery.
We and our parents worked hard at helping with the great Fair and Achievement Days we had this August. We also helped with the 4-H food stand at Ribs, Rods, and Rock and Roll in September.
Every member was able to give a club presentation this year.
Now we are ready to begin a new 4-H year, starting it off with National 4-H Week from October 3 -9, 2010!
