The Vermillion Rotary Club held its weekly luncheon meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at the Neuharth Media Center on the campus of USD. President-elect David Herbster opened the meeting, lead us in the invocation and recitation of the Rotary 4-Way Test.
This was followed by a round of singing, introduction of guests, and announcements.
Rotarian David Herbster introduced Jasper DesLauriers as our speaker for the day. She is the executive director of the Youth Business Adventure headquartered in Pierre. Ms. DesLauriers was a 2009 graduate of USD majoring in Contemporary Media and Journalism.
She began by saying that the South Dakota Chamber of Commerce sponsors YBA. She also said that the mission of YBA is to teach students and educators about the American private enterprise system. Additionally YBA encourages students to stay in South Dakota for higher education and workforce opportunities.
The annual budget for YBA is about $200,000. It is a nonprofit organization funded by the South Dakota business community, civic organizations, and individuals.
The YBA workshops are one week long and will be held this coming summer at Black Hills State June 5-10, and at USD June 19-24. Students are accepted based on evaluations from a teacher. They may receive two college credits for attending. Students also have an opportunity to receive a $500 scholarship (1 is offered for every 20 – 25 students).
The program is designed to promote business skills. They receive hands-on business experience as they create mock companies and make real business decisions. They create products, make presentations, create advertising, and sell products to other companies. YBA also brings in speakers from real businesses and entrepreneurial entities. They also tour businesses and other companies. They also have educational professionals attend who then take their new knowledge back to their classrooms.
Students benefit by acquiring educational experience and skills. Businesses are exposed to students who may become future employees.
Volunteering to be mentors, company advisors, or volunteering their businesses or organizations for touring by the students may involve anyone.
