Freshmen Travis Brenner and Megan Hilson were the first to finish for the Coyote men's and women's cross country teams at the Creighton/UNO Invitational on Saturday at Chili Greens. Both South Dakota squads beat Creighton, but lost to Nebraska in the double dual.
The USD men claimed an 18-45 advantage over the Bluejays by placing eight runners in front of their second, and also had a close battle with the Huskers. Nebraska got the first two across the line, but the next three were Coyotes. The Huskers claimed the 24-33 win, though, with the next four runners across the line before USD's fourth. Brenner (Yankton, S.D.) traversed the 8k course in 27:10 to finish fourth overall and was followed by fellow freshman Jeff Mettler (Eureka, S.D.) in the same time for fifth. Sophomores Mark Hayden (St. Louis, Mo.) and Ethan Marquardt (Albert Lea, Minn.) finished seventh and 13th in 27:16 and 28:04, respectively. Junior Mike Schrum (Harrisburg, S.D.) followed with a 28:15 for 14th and freshman Alex Hohenthaner (Yankton, S.D.) was 18th in 28:45. Senior Andrew Duba (Sioux Falls, S.D.) rounded out USD's top seven in 29:09 for 22nd.
The Coyote women placed seven runners before the Bluejays third for a 24-37 victory, but lost 15-49 to a Nebraska team that just missed an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships last season. Hilson (Yankton, S.D.) paced the USD women through the 5k course in 19:51 to finish ninth overall. Sophomores Carol Miller (Mead, Neb.) and Sigornie Pfefferle (Grand Island, Neb.) ran 19:57 and 20:01 for 12th and 14th, respectively, to finish just in front of a solid pack of Coyote runners. Five women finished within 12 seconds of each other to claim 17th through 21st. Freshman Ashleigh Giese (Marshall, Wisc.) posted a 20:27 and junior Kelsey Robish (Huron, S.D.) finished in 20:30, while freshman Kristin Steffen (Crofton, Neb.) and senior Sarah Wickman (Iowa City, Iowa) both crossed the line in 20:37. Freshman Britni Waller (Lincoln, Neb.) ran a 20:39 to round out the group.
The Coyotes continue their season at the Oz Memorial Invitational on Friday in St. Paul, Minn. The men race at 5 p.m. followed by the women at 5:45 p.m. Check out the complete 2010 USD cross country men's and women's rosters by visitingwww.usdcoyotes.com.
