Vermillion High's girls soccer team will be home against St. Thomas More at Cotton Park at 5 p.m. today (Friday), followed by a home match against Harrisburg at 5 p.m. Monday, as they continue to search for their elusive initial win of the season.
Meanwhile, the boys varsity makes its second and last Black Hills trek of the season this weekend, going to Hot Springs for a 5 p.m. game Friday and up to Custer for a 1 p.m. faceoff Saturday.
The varsity girls went 1-1 last week, winning an exciting 2-1 decision over Mitchell and losing at Groton 2-0.
Coach Dave LaCombe's moving senior captain Ashley Brunick to the weak side because she was being heavily defended by Mitchell paid off. Brunick, shortly after the move, was able to beat the Mitchell defense to the outside, allowing Brunick to cross the ball to Teddi Settles, running at the net diagonally, to put the ball in the hole.
Brunick also assisted on the earlier Tanager goal scored by Natasha Samudzi. Katie Wasley in goal made two saves.
LaCombe credited the VHS defense led by seniors Tracy Howe, Morgan Erickson and Tasha Donnelly as a key factor in the win.
At Groton the next morning a pair of key mistakes allowed Groton to capitalize on two goal-scoring plays. The Tigers kept Wasley busy in goal where she made 12 saves.
"We played the first half very flat but came out in the second half much stronger, allowing only two shots on goal and one corner kick," LaCombe said.
In JV girls games Vermillion defeated Mitchell 3-1 and lost to Groton 2-0. Allie Mockler scored twice in the Mitchell win, once on an assist by Kelsey Meadows. Janani Ragothoman also had an unassisted goal. In net Hailey Freidel and Twila Sweeney each had two saves. At Groton Sweeney saved three and Freidel two.
The Tanager boys varsity won a 3-2 decision over Mitchell. Levi James scored two Tanager goals, and Nathan Samudzi put the other into the net. Then on Monday night the Tanagers played at always-tough Sioux Falls Christian and came home with a scoreless tie as Alex Robertson shut out the Chargers in goal.
