Junior Mitch Ellison's 42 on the front nine and 46 coming back in earned him Vermillion's best score as the Tanagers played in the Big 8 Conference golf tournament at the Madison Country Club Tuesday.
Ellison's 88 earned him a tie for ninth place individually. Mitch Nelson combined a 45 and a 49 for a 94. Zach McDonald played the course in 99 strokes and Carter Andre and Peter Haught in 102.
Madison won the team title with a 340 team score, four strokes better than Harrisburg and West Central. The Tanagers were fourth at 383, followed by Lennox at 398. Madison senior Michael Sullivan with a 79 was the conference medalist.
In junior varsity play Paul Schwasinger's 111 was the best Tanager round. Jay Munger finished at 130, Sam Craig 135 and Tristan Meadows 144. Madison also won the team title in the JV ranks.
In an earlier meet at Elk Point-Jefferson last week, Vermillion placed ninth as a team with a 348 score. Mitch Nelson's 82 earned him a tie for 18th place, the best Tanager placing.
Monday's Big 8 meet ended the regular season. Vermillion and other teams in Region 2A will assemble at Elk Point on Monday for the regional tournament where state tourney qualifiers will be determined.
