Vermillion's volleyballers opened their season with a 3-0 whitewash of Todd County as part of a triangular at the VHS gym on Aug. 31. The Tanagers continued the first week with 3-0 losses to Lennox and South Sioux City.
Coach Lenni Billberg's team will spend this Saturday at a tournament in Luverne, MN, with both "A" and "B" squads participating. Next week the Tanagers play at Sergeant Bluff-Luton on Tuesday and at Bon Homme's invitational Sept. 18 before getting another home match against Tea Area on Sept. 21.
Lizzie Bye slammed home 10 kills while Beth Szymonski had seven and Kylie Fischbach five in the win over Todd County. The Tanagers won by game scores of 25-13, 25-14 and 25-17. Fischbach and Sami Girard each recorded 10 set assists, and Fischbach contributed three services aces. Szymonski, Carlee Sorensen and Bye had two aces apiece.
On defense Sorenson and Bye had 13 and 10 digs, respectively. Lexi Regnerus had two blocked shots and Bailey Carlson one.
Lennox took a two-game lead on wins by 25-20 and 25-19. The Tanagers put up a stiff fight in the third game before falling 28-26.
Kelly Amundson had 10 kills, Fischbach five, Szymonski four and Regnerus four. Fischbach and Girard led in set assists with 12 each, and Fischbach had a pair of service aces. Sorensen with 15 and Bye with nine led in digs, and Amundson had two blocked shots for VHS.
South Sioux City got the jump on the Tanagers in Thursday's dual with a 25-22 first-game victory, then followed with wins by 25-20 and 25-17.
VHS was led defensively by Sorensen with 14 digs and Bye and Girard with eight apiece. Amundson was credited with three blocked shots. Girard had 14 set assists and Fischbach 11. Amundson and Bye led in the kills department with six each with Regnerus and Szymonski at four each and Fischbach three.
