The South Dakota Cooperative Extension Service will host its "Equine Fall Kickoff" event on Oct. 9.
The Clay County 4-H program will partner with Extension staff for this event at the Clay County Rodeo Grounds, located 2 and one-half miles west of Vermillion, just off Timber Road. The free event begins at 1 p.m.
Participants can receive information on nutrition, vaccinations, and maintenance for the upcoming winter, and another session will cover versatility in today's performance horses and how cross-training can make for better competitors.
At 2 p.m., Janell Gause, an Extreme Mustang Makeover competitor, will explain the work she did during a 90-day training program with a previously untrained horse, "Stryder." Gause will demonstrate just how far she was able to lead this now-competitive animal.
The kickoff will conclude with a question-and-answer session with presenters and the arena will be open for riding. Park trails near the site also are available for those who wish to ride.
South Dakota Cooperative Extension 4-H/Youth Development Educator Will Kennedy can answer questions on the event. Call him at 605-677-7111. In case of poor weather conditions, the event may be postponed. If weather is poor on Oct. 9, call Kennedy at 605-670-8606.
