Tanager cross country runners perform strong at Lennox Invitational

Vermillion's varsity boys cross-country runners captured third place, just one point out of second, at the Lennox Invitational last week, a positive sign as next week's regional meet approaches.

"The top five all ran very well and did the things they need to do for us to have a shot at qualifying for the state meet as a team," commented Coach Kelly Fischbach.  "Alex Card (12th place) and Matt Hirsch (15th) continued to pace the varsity squad, and Nathan Ford (17th) had his best race of the season.  That is so important to build confidence heading into regionals.  Robert Osterberg was solid, and Colin Olson really stepped up his performance, passing six or seven runners in the final 200 meters.  That fifth runner is so important in case of a tie in team points."

Harrisburg was boys team champ with Lennox second.

The Tanager girls varsity placed seventh.  Garretson and West Central were the top two teams.

Blair Gilkyson, who placed fifth, had a great race, her coach said.  "She went out faster at the start of the race, and that really paid off for her."  Fischbach also said VHS got good performances from Alyssa Soesbe and Cheyenne Mallory.

The Tanager runners were at the Big 8 meet in Lennox yesterday.  Next Friday's regional steps off at 3 p.m. at Lennox.
