After a bye week the Vermillion football Tanagers return to action Friday at Dell Rapids against the Quarriers, who this week are ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 11A.
Coach Gary Culver's Red and White stand at 2-2 after defeating Lennox and South Sioux City and losing to St. Thomas More and, on a last-minute touchdown, to Canton.
The strength of Vermillion's opponents is evidenced by the fact that, in the newly-released SDHSAA power-points standings, the Tanagers rank second in Region 2 of Class 11A ahead of Canton. Leading the region at the moment is Harrisburg (3-1) with Dakota Valley (2-2) fourth, Tea (1-3) fifth and Lennox (0-5) sixth.
The top three teams in the region automatically qualify for the playoffs, and the fourth team could as well if its power rating is among the next four highest ratings statewide.
This week's Tanager opponents escaped against Canton, 20-18, in their opener, then won big in their next three games — 26-6 over Tri-Valley, 49-7 over Madison and 48-12 over Lennox.
Sisseton leads the 11A sportswriters rankings this week, followed by Dells, Harrisburg, West Central and Canton. After this week's game against No. 2, Vermillion gets the treat of facing No. 3 Harrisburg on the road next week and will take on No. 4 West Central later in the month.
