Finally, the Vermillion volleyball team gets a match at home.
It's been a month since the Tanagers have been able to play before home fans, and they will get that chance Friday night when they host Dakota Valley at the VHS gym.
Next week Vermillion concludes the regular season with a match at Harrisburg Monday and a home match Thursday against the region's top team, Elk Point-Jefferson, which is ranked second in the state behind Wagner.
Last week the Tanagers again started strong in both of their matches, winning the first game, but they couldn't sustain that momentum long enough to secure a match victory in either case.
At Ponca on Tuesday Vermillion took a 1-0 lead with a 25-16 opening-game victory, lost 25-19, then won 25-18 for a 2-1 lead. Ponca tied the match with a 25-19 win in the fourth game and won the decider, 15-8.
The Tanagers won a nail-biter of a first game at Canton Thursday, 29-27. The C-Hawks came back with three straight game wins, 25-21, 27-25 and 25-15 for a 3-1 victory.
Lexi Regnerus and Kylie Fischbach had seven kills apiece for VHS. Carlee Sorensen contributed 24 digs, Sami Girard 18 assists and Kelly Amundson five blocks.
