Vermillion's tennis girls accumulated 140 points at the state tournament in Rapid City, placing 14th of 22 teams.
The three-day meet was plagued by rain part of the time, forcing a disruption in schedules and sending some matches into indoor facilities. The Tanagers' 14th-place finish in the team standings put them ahead of two ESD Conference schools and two Greater Dakota Conference schools among others.
Valerie Robinson, Vermillion's second-flight singles player, won five of her six matches to earn a ninth-place finish, the highlight of the Tanagers' tournament appearance.
Robinson won her opening match 6-2, 6-0 over Lucas of Rapid City Central to reach the quarterfinals. There she lost 6-0, 6-1 to Malik of Rapid City Stevens. After that, however, Robinson worked her way back through the consolation bracket, winning three straight –10-2 over Diddle, Brookings; 10-2 over Parrett, Spearfish, and 10-5 over Strohfus, Aberdeen, to reach the ninth-place match. There Robinson was victories 10-8 over Darr of Sioux Falls Washington.
No. 1 singles player Claire Jones won her opening-round match 6-1, 6-2 over Burke of Pierre to reach the quarterfinals, but lost her next two matches. Dylan Daniels at No. 4 singles won a match in the consolation round, 10-8 over Anderson of Brookings.
The Tanagers' No. 1 doubles team of Jones and Robinson had a first-round bye so got into the quarterfinals, but there they lost to the eventual state champions, VanDeMark and Townsend of O'Gorman, 6-4, 6-2.
