Ashley Brunick and Dexter Mehlhaf were named as the September Vermillion High School Students of the Month. These are the first two of 16 VHS students that will be honored throughout the year due to their dedicated leadership in the classroom, in their activities and in their community. First Bank & Trust-Vermillion recognizes each student with a $100 scholarship to the college or vocational school of their choice.
Brunick's "enthusiasm and playfulness are present when she walks into the classroom," her faculty nomination related. "Unafraid to ask questions or for further explanations if needed, she brings the entire class to a higher level of understanding." Her college plans are to attend Northern Arizona University to major in health science and to eventually enter the University of South Dakota Medical School.
Her abundance of activities include Sunday School teacher, soccer, basketball, dance team, Spanish Club and cross country. Her parents are Dave and Shelley Brunick.
Mehlhaf participates in show choir, wrestling, football, and track. He is the National Honor Society treasurer and the Student Council vice president. His parents are Duane Mehlhaf and Tamara Hofer.
"Dexter has a work ethic that is very hard to find in a young man his age," according to his faculty endorsement. "He is dedicated to his schoolwork while taking part in various extra-curricular activities." Along with two jobs, he has volunteered at the library as well as assisting with youth football and wrestling.
