Lucille O'Connor, 90, of Vermillion, SD died Friday, November 12, 2010 at her residence.
Funeral mass was 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 15 at the Saint Agnes Catholic Church in Vermillion with Father Johns Fisher officiating. Burial will follow in the Calvary Cemetery in Vermillion. Visitation began at 5 p.m. Sunday with a rosary and prayer service at 7:30 p.m. all at the church.
Lucille Kribell O'Connor was born Aug. 31, 1920, the daughter of Lew and Katherine Neuroth Kribell. Lucille was raised on a farm south of Beresford, and attended Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Emmett. Lucille graduated from Mount Marty High School and College in Yankton. She taught school in the Irene rural schools, and joined the Cadet Nursing Corp at McKennan Hospital in Aberdeen.
She married Howard O'Connor May 12, 1945. They made their home on a farm in the Garryowen community where they lived for 33 years and raised 11 children. They bought a home and moved to Vermillion, March 1, 1978.
After raising her family, Lucille had more time for helping others. She was a Eucharistic minister at St. Agnes, she sang in the adult choir, and she was a member of the Catholic Daughters and the Saint Vincent de Paul Society.
Lucille who was Catholic Daughter Mother of the year in 1980 taught religion classes for many years. For over 27 years she went to the nursing home for prayers and visiting where she made many friends. Lucille and her pen pal Mitch Bierle of Vermillion corresponded from the time he was in second grade through his graduation from college.
Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Howard of Vermillion; and their 11 children: Rosemarie O'Connor and Michael Allsopp of Des Moines, IA, Dan and Dot of Burbank, Susanne (Steve) Foster of Jackson, MN, Donna Heide of Omaha, NE, Tim O'Connor of Beresford, Kelly and Kris of Vermillion, Kevin and Michele of Des Moines, IA, Shannon and Michele of Omaha, NE, Jane O'Connor and Angelo DeSanto of Omaha, NE, Marty (Jill) O'Connor of Leawood, KS and Mary (Tom) Merrigan of Vermillion.
Lucille is also survived by five sisters, Mildred O'Connor, Monica Lyle, Dolores Valsvig, Mary Therese Jennings and Anne Harrington; her brother, Lewis; 27 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, Lew and Katherine Kribell; three brothers, Dan, James and Larry (who died at the age of five); her granddaughter, Wendy Noteboom Ewell, and son-in-law, Dennis Heide; and grand daughter-in-law, Megan Tolsma O'Connor.
