USD Opera presents ‘An Evening of One-Act Operas’

University of South Dakota Opera is presenting "An Evening of One-Act Operas" at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20 and at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 21 at Colton Recital Hall, which is located at the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts on the South Dakota campus.

Directed by Tracelyn Gesteland, D.M.A., assistant professor of voice and opera, the operas are "The Velveteen Rabbit" and "Signor Deluso." Tickets for the program are $5 and can be purchased the day of the show.

"The Velveteen Rabbit" is a 35-minute opera based on the classic children's story by Margery Williams and it features cast members Cody Perk of Yankton, playing the part of The Velveteen Rabbit; Laura Bertschinger of Creighton, NE, as Nanny (Nov. 20 performance); Kristin Edwards of Aberdeen, as Nanny (Nov. 21 performance); Matt Black of Yankton, as Boy; Anthony Hunt of Pierre, as Old Horse; Kristin Roble of Spring Grove, MN, as Action Figure; Rachel Carroll of Rapid City, as Race Car Driver (Nov. 20); Ashley Hogarth of Sioux Falls, as Race Car Driver (Nov. 21); Amanda Rich of South Sioux City, NE, as Nursery Fairy; Benjamin Mauritz of Spirit Lake, IA, as Doctor; Sara Otteman of Yankton, as Real Girl Rabbit (Nov. 20 show); Aubrey Sea of Sioux City, IA, as Real Girl Rabbit (Nov. 21 show), and Clint Johnson of Harrisburg, as Real Boy Rabbit.

"Signor Deluso" is a 30-minute comic opera sung in English and its cast members include Philip Munkvold of Vermillion, as Signor Deluso; Erin E. Connor of Fresno, CA, as Clara; Susanne Harmon of Sioux Falls, as Célie; Ryan Landis of Rapid City, as Léon; Ashley Evelyn Mazur of Paullina, IA, as Rosine; Anthony Hunt of Pierre, as Gorgibus; and Elayne Bilbrey of Sioux City, IA, as Town Magistrate.

Additionally, the pianist for both productions is Parker Knox, and performances of "The Velveteen Rabbit" and "Signor Deluso" will also be featured at elementary and high schools in Vermillion, Sioux Falls and Yankton beginning Thursday, Nov. 11 and continuing through Tuesday, Nov. 23.
