USD professor accused of assaulting boy

VERMILLION (AP) — The head of the University of South Dakota's Contemporary Media and Journalism department is accused of assaulting a fifth-grade boy.

Media professor and former youth football coach Charles Lubbers says the case stems from a misunderstanding about a minor incident on the field.

The Argus Leader reports that prosecutors are pressing forward and the 49-year-old Lubbers has been indicted.

Lubbers says the boy was trying to tackle another player after the whistle blew and Lubbers put his arm in the way, knocking the boy to the ground. He says the incident has been blown out of proportion.

University Human Resources Director Diane Zak says the off-campus incident doesn't rise to the level of an ethics offense even if Lubbers is convicted.
