Mammography continues to be the best screening tool for breast cancer. It can find cancers at an early stage, when they are small and most responsive to treatment. Revolutionary full-field digital mammography is a technology which enhances breast care with new efficiencies for physicians and brings a peace of mind to patients through its speed and reliable electronic information. This state-of-the-art technology offers women a high level of convenience by producing near-instant, easy-to-read computerized breast images. In April 2009, Dakota Hospital Foundation made a significant investment by funding the installation of full-field digital mammography equipment in the radiology department at Sanford Medical Center Vermillion. Mammography services at Sanford Vermillion are currently accredited by the American College of Radiology as they have been for the past 15 years.Dakota Hospital Foundation is kicking off its Fourth annual Tree of Lights fundraiser this month. Proceeds from the Tree of Lights will continue to support the digital mammography project here in Vermillion including funding of ongoing equipment costs as well as mammography services for those unable to afford the screening. The Tree of Lights provides community members with the opportunity to purchase a light in memory of, in honor of, or as a special holiday greeting to friends, coworkers and loved ones. The four-story evergreen located at the corner of Main and Plum streets at Sanford Vermillion has been designated for the touching display. The Tree of Lights will remain lit through the holiday season.Lights purchased serve as a unique holiday gift. With provision of the appropriate information, anyone recognized through the purchase of a light will receive the gift of a special holiday ornament card. All lights purchased are also recognized in Tree of Lights ads published in December. Dakota Hospital Foundation is excited to once again partner with the USD Department of Music on Sunday, Dec. 12 for two special holiday events. The USD Department of Music Holiday Concert begins at 3 p.m. at the Vermillion High Theatre for the Performing Arts. Following the holiday music performance, concert-goers and community members are invited to attend the Tree of Lights Open House at Sanford Vermillion from 5 to 7 p.m. The open house will feature a lovely holiday atmosphere, Christmas music, refreshments and a fabulous buffet of hors d'oeuvres. For more information on the Tree of Lights project or to purchase lights in support of this worthwhile DHF project, visit us at sanfordvermillion.org/foundation.
