Six Vermillion wrestlers earned places Saturday as the Tanagers competed in Sioux Falls Roosevelt's invitational tournament.The Tanagers placed seventh as a team with 119.5 points behind champion Harrisburg, the four Sioux Falls schools, and Brandon Valley.Brett Bye, Vermillion eighth grader, won the championship at 112 pounds, climaxing his day with a 3-0 shutout of Schmit of Harrisburg in his title match.Junior Will Mart reached the final match in the 215-pound class before settling for second place. He dropped a 6-5 decision to Washington's O'Farrell in the championship match.Two Tanagers earned third-place honors. Eighth-grader Regan Bye took that position in the 130-pound division, ending with a flourish in a 1:31 pin over Peterson of Tea Area. Senior Jake Knutson ended the day as the third-place man in the 285-pound class, pinning Roosevelt's Kovaleski in 1:50 in his final match.Vermillion had two fourth-place men, including junior Brandon Steenholdt at 103 pounds and junior Brenden Raizola at 135. Both sustained quick-pin losses in their respective third-place matches, Steenholdt at the hands of Washington's Potratz and Raizola to Brandon Valley's Winter.The Tanagers will spend find a plethora of tough competition Saturday as they compete in Yankton's invitational tournament. Next Thursday Vermillion has a home dual against West Central.
