Vermillion's JV girls basketball team survived an 8-0 deficit to take a 27-20 halftime lead and then edge Harrisburg 40-38 in an exciting season opener last Friday.
The Tanagers, after holding the lead through the second half, lost it in the final minute, but a layup by Sami Girard with 35 seconds left and a key free throw by Allison Heine in the final seconds provided the winning margin. Heine hit on five of her six free shots in the game.
Claire Jones with 12 points and Bailey Carlson with 10 led the offense. Lizzy Bye and Carlson were leading rebounders with five apiece, and Heine added four. Blair Gilkyson was instrumental defensively with five steals but also dished out four assists.
"They kept their composure late in the game and came through with a big win," said Coach Lori Jerred. The Tanagers outrebounded Harrisburg 23-20.
