U. Theatre present Shakespeare’s ‘Twelfth Night’ Dec. 3-7

The University of South Dakota Department of Theatre will present William Shakespeare's timeless comedy "Twelfth Night," or "What You Will," December 3 – 7 in the Wayne S. Knutson Theatre in the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts.

Directed by Chaya Gordon-Bland, assistant professor of theatre with a specialty in Shakespeare production, Twelfth Night is a tale in which mistaken identity leads lovers astray; practical jokes, festive revelry, and thrilling swordplay combine to make this one of Shakespeare's most beloved comedies!

Twelfth Night begins with a harrowing shipwreck that separates twins Viola (Natalie Polisson, Crown Point, IN) and Sebastian (Zach Drane, Amana) – but tragedy turns to comedy when they wash up on the shores of Illyria. There, the lovely Viola masquerades as Cesario the page and enters the service of Duke Orsino (David Hernandez III, Huron), with whom she falls deeply in love.

Oblivious to Viola's identity and intentions, the Duke is instead infatuated with Countess Olivia (Tarryn Rouse, Doniphan, NE), who has firmly rejected all his previous advances. When the Duke sends his new "page" to woo Olivia, complications arise when the Countess instead falls in love with the young "boy" who has paid her a visit.

Pictured are Reese Porter (Sir Toby Belch), Tarryn Rouse (Olivia), and Zach Drane (Sebastian).

In the midst of this, pranksters within Olivia's court: Maria (Jamie Fields, Bellevue, NE), Sir Toby Belch (Reese Porter, S. Sioux City, NE), Sir Andrew Aguecheek (Patrick Beasley, Lincoln, NE), and Feste, the clown (Allen Jones, Miller) succeed in fooling Olivia's dour steward Malvolio (Cody Strand, Brandon) into believing that Olivia is in fact madly in love with him.

Confusion further abounds when Viola's identical twin Sebastian arrives and enters the tangled web. Other actors within Illyria include Jessie Atkinson (Sioux City, IA), Will Cornay (Yankton), Kevin Earlywine (Rockford, IL), and Fred Liebfried (Anson, ME).

Professors Tim Case (Sioux City, IA) and Anthony Pellecchia (Cleveland, OH) design the setting and lights, respectively, while undergraduate student Natalie Freisen (Freeman), designs the costumes. "Twelfth Night" performs Dec. 3, 4, 6 and 7 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. in the Wayne S. Knutson Theatre.

A post-show discussion will follow the Dec. 6 performance. Tickets are $14 for adults, $9 for K-12 and non-USD students with ID, and $4 for USD students with ID.

The box office is open noon to 5 p.m. for walk up sales beginning Nov. 24. Reservations may also be made by calling the USD Theatre box office at (605) 677-5400 or online at www.usd.edu/theatre.
