The University of South Dakota announced that Brian L. Kaatz, Pharm. D., will retire as dean of the School of Health Sciences effective June 2011.
"June 2011 will mark 22 years of work in South Dakota higher education and over seven years as a dean. While this work remains challenging and fascinating to me, there are still a couple of other chapters I hope to write in my life," Kaatz stated. "I am thankful for the opportunity of working with a dedicated faculty and staff, who are motivated every day toward the training of the nation's future healthcare workers. Their dedication has been an inspiration to me."
Kaatz has served as a professor and dean of the School of Health Sciences since June 2008 after serving as dean of the College of Pharmacy at South Dakota State University. Prior to becoming dean of the College of Pharmacy, Kaatz was a professor and head of the department of clinical pharmacy at SDSU for more than a dozen years. Before working at SDSU, Kaatz served as an administrative pharmacist for hospitals in Sioux Falls, Rochester, MN, and Minneapolis, MN. He received a B.S. in pharmacy from South Dakota State University and a doctor of pharmacy degree from the University of Minnesota.
A native of Minnesota, Kaatz and his wife, Joyce, presently reside in Sioux Falls. The couple has two grown children currently residing in Minneapolis. The School of Health Sciences trains students in critical health care professions for South Dakota and the region. These careers are projected to be among the fastest growing in the next decade. Programs include Alcohol and Drug Studies, Clinical Laboratory Science, Dental Hygiene, Health Sciences Major, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant, Physical Therapy and Social Work.
