USD swimmers pick up 5 wins at Falcon Invite

The South Dakota swimming and diving teams added five more first-place finishes during the final day of competition at the Falcon Invite Saturday in Minneapolis, MN. The five-team event, which was hosted by Wisconsin-River Falls, was held at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.For the Coyote men, junior Thad Stoddard won the 100 backstroke, while the Coyotes' 200 medley relay was victorious. Junior Elizabeth Hoffman led the Coyote women win two wins, with the Coyote 400 free relay picking up a victory as well.Stoddard (Douglas, WY) had a strong showing in the 100 back with a time of 50.59, where he bested junior teammate Terry Rolfe (Newcastle, WY), who finished at 52.11.Stoddard also was part of the winning 200 medley relay, which posted a time of 1:33.24. Senior Bridger Miller (Upton, WY) , freshman Dakota Wheeler (Oklahoma City, OK) and junior Dane Van Arkel (Colorado Springs, CO) teamed up for that win.Rolfe added a third in the 400 IM (4:14.08) while Wheeler was third in the 100 butterfly (51.40).Freshman Jeff Libov (Omaha, NE) added a fourth in the 1,650 (17:12.08) with sophomore Nick Challgren (Cedar Falls, IA) taking fifth at 17:47.92.Hoffman (Eureka) continued her outstanding season for the South Dakota women. She recorded a win in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.22, and added a win in the 100 butterfly at 57.84.Hoffman was also part of the 400 free relay which won with a time of 3:31.70. That consisted of senior Sallie Collins (Hastings, MN), senior Rita Buschbacher (Brighton, MI), sophomore Kaitlyn Jefferson (Westland, MI) and Hoffman.Freshman Linay McCrady (Savage, MN) was third at 18:09.42 in the 1,650 free with sophomore Jackie Kahnke (Shakopee, MN) taking sixth at 18:31.28.Freshman Mariah Anderson (Kearney, NE) was third in the 100 backstroke at 1:00.57 with junior Leah Schretenthaler (Aiea, HI) taking sixth at 1:03.66.Freshman Emily Alitz (Hastings, MN) was fourth in the 400 IM (4:49.33) and added a fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:31.05).Junior Kayla Smith (Woodbury, MN) was fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:32.77).South Dakota's 200 medley relay was third at 1:49.69. That consisted of Anderson, Collins, freshman Brooke Zhorne (Chanhassen, MN) and Hoffman.Buschbacher added a fifth in the 100 free at 54.22.The Coyote men will face Morningside on Dec. 9 at home in their final action before Christmas while the Coyote women are off until Jan. 21 when both teams play host to South Dakota State.
