VHS gymnasts lose to Yankton by less than a point

By the margin of less than a point, Vermillion's gymnasts were edged by Yankton in a dual at the VHS gym last week, 125.95 to 125.4.

For the Tanagers the dual was the midway of an early-season homestand that will conclude with a dual against West Central next Thursday.  Then the VHS gymnasts will become road warriors during January, concluding the regular season with the Stanley County tournament Jan. 8, a pair of road duals and an out-of-town triangular before the regional meet brings them back to their own gym on Feb. 10.

The all-around standings in the Yankton dual showed the Gazelles' Sam Wampal as the champion with a 34.15 total score, but VHS had the next two best gymnasts for the night.  Amber Walker was second at 33.5 and Elly Melby third at 33.0.  Morgan Hower of the Tanagers stood seventh at 24.6.

Walker won the beam competition at 8.95, tied for second in floor exercise at 8.25, finished sixth on the bars at 7.5 and placed second in the vault at 8.8 while Melby won the vault at 8.9, was sixth on the beam at 7.45, tied for second on the floor at 8.25, and was third on bars at 8.4.

Three other Tanagers had top-five finishes in individual events.  Hower was fourth in the vault, Cassie Donahoe fifth on the beam and Rory Tucker fifth in floor exercise.

 In the JV section of the dual Yankton prevailed by a team total of 104.2 to 67.95.  Vermillion's Hope Knedler was second in the all-around totals with a 19.25 score.
