VHS Oral Interp earns team excellence trophy

The 2010 VHS Oral Interp team's season ended with three superior ratings and a team excellence trophy at the State Festival held in Aberdeen Dec. 3-4. Three events involving five students secured a chance for the state title at the regional competition held in Harrisburg Nov. 16: Readers Theatre: Joe Geis, Randy LaMie, Leah Geis, Sam Pearson; Duet: Sam Pearson and William Card; Humor: Joe Geis.Students who did not qualify for the state tournament were able to enter a second chance meet hosted at Mount Marty College in Yankton. Taking first place that day were the team of Meghan Cameron and Allison Howe in duet and Mathia Shukmaker in poetry. Rachel Axtell was given a second place nod in serious prose.Other season highlights include a first place team trophy at the Washington Warrior tournament and sweeping the duet category at the Yankton tournament.Prepping a piece to compete at the state level takes hours of cutting scripts, rehearsal and coaching. "Students who put in the time reaped the benefits in the end," head coach Mary Begley said.
