What would have been some great early-season competition for Vermillion's young wrestlers was weathered out by the Dec. 11 blizzard.
The Tanagers were to have joined Canton, Harrisburg, West Central and Norfolk at the Yankton Invitational. The tournament will not be rescheduled.
Coach Joe Delvaux and his boys got back to the business of wrestling against out-of-towners – instead of each other in the practice room – last night against West Central. That was their last pre-Christmas match. Next up will be the high-profile Sioux Falls Lincoln tournament on Dec. 27-28.
The Tanagers did get in a pair of duals at Madison's triangular last week, whipping Tea Area 51-18 and losing to Madison 51-30.
Vermillion welcomed back Lance Burkhart for his first match of the season in the Tea dual. He didn't win that one, but he did score a pin a bit later as the Tanagers wrestled Madison. Burkhart at 140 pounds pinned the Bulldogs' R. Fender in 5:49.
Also winning against Madison were the Tanagers' two biggest boys. Will Mart pinned B. Gusso in 1:03 at 215 pounds, and Jake Knutson did the same to Landeen at 285 pounds in 1:20. The other Tanager points were earned at 103 and 112 as Brandon Steenholtz and Brett Bye picked up forfeit wins.
Joe Mueller at 119, Sineway Marshall at 125, Regan Bye at 130, Alex Osborne at 145, Dexter Mehlhaf at 160 and Seth Heine at 171 lost by pins to Madison while Brenden Raizola lost an 8-4 decision at 135 pounds. Vermillion forfeited at 152 and 189.
