Junior guard Charlie Westbrook tied a season high with 24 points to pace four Coyotes in double figures, as the South Dakota men's basketball team rolled to a 79-66 win over UL-Monroe on Sunday afternoon at Redbird Arena during the final day of the Global Sports Roundball Classic. The Coyotes (2-4) connected on 12 of their first 15 shots to open the game and led the Warhawks (2-5) by as many as 20 in the second half.
Westbrook (Milwaukee, Wis.) went 5-of-5 to start the contest and finishing 9-of-16, including 3-of-4 from deep, to earn the 24 points, while also earning three assists and two steals. USD got an all-around effort from several other Coyotes also, as sophomore guard Jake Thomas (Racine, Wis.) posted 20 points on 5-of-11 treys and freshman center Trevor Gruis (Ellsworth, Minn.) posted his first career double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Junior guard Louie Krogman (White River) rounded out USD's double-figure scorers with 12, while freshman guard Steve Tecker (Brule, Wis.) had a career-high 10 rebounds.South Dakota shot 45 percent (27-of-60) from the field and 41 percent (10-of-24) beyond the arc, and held LMU to 41 percent (25-of-60) and 26 percent (6-of-23). USD led in rebounds (38-32), assists (15-9) and bench scoring (26-3).
