Coyote track and field squads win 10 events at season opener

The South Dakota track and field squads started the 2011 calendar year on a positive note by winning 10 events in a talent-filled Graphic Edge Alumni Meet on Saturday afternoon in the DakotaDome.

The Coyote women claimed six individual events to four titles for the men, while USD redshirts or alumni also won four other events against Division I foes South Dakota State, Drake and North Dakota.

The sprinters paced the USD women, as sophomore Gabriel Williams ran a personal-best 7.62 to win the 60 meters and fellow sophomore Alexa Duling won the 60-meter hurdles with a personal-best 8.98.

Freshman Megan Hilson (Yankton) won the 3,000 meters in 10:35, while junior Emma Erickson (Gayville), who is redshirting the indoor season, finished first running unattached in the 800 meters in 2:13. In the field events, sophomore Bethany Buell won the pole vault at 13-1, senior Crystal Schiernbeck claimed the long jump title in 18-1 and senior Jasmine Mosley won the shot put in 45-11 3/4.

Other notable top-five finishes for the South Dakota women included seconds from junior Ashlea Johnson (Yankton) in the long jump (18-0 1/2), freshman Kristin Steffen (Crofton, NE) in the 3,000 meters (10:42) and sophomore Carol Miller in the mile (5:14). Freshman Anna Hyronimus claimed third in the 400 meters in 1:00.42.

On the men�s side, sophomore Matt Kerswill crossed the line first in the 60 meters in 6.94, while senior Bill Lane accomplished the same in the 400 meters in 50.84. Freshman Jeff Mettler won the 3,000 meters in 8:42 and the USD men also won the 4×400-meter relay.

Coyote alumni Terry Liggins, a former national champion, won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.22, while Sam Pribyl, also a former national champion, won the pole vault (16-0 3/4) and Chris Slatt won the long jump (23-0 3/4).

Notable top-five finishes for the Coyote men included second-place accolades from junior Jeremy Blount in the 60 meters (6.97), freshman Parker Erickson (Gayville) in the 400 meters (50.94) and sophomore Casey Shade in the 800 meters (1:55). USD went 3-5 in the 200 meters and 3-6 in the mile.

For South Dakota State women, Michelle Schuch (Tyndall) placed third in the weight throw (53-5.5) and 11th in the shot put (34-11),  Krista Creager (Yankton) finished fourth in the 800 (2:23.17) and Mariah Hofer (Yankton) placed 11th in the mile (5:41.72).

Brad Anderson (Yankton) placed sixth in the 3,000 (9:19.93) for the SDSU men.

USD continues its season at the University of Minnesota�s Jack Johnson Classic next weekend in Minneapolis, MN.
