A return to NCAA postseason competition and a home meet in Yankton highlight the University of South Dakota track and field's 2011 outdoor schedule, which was announced by head coaches Lucky Huber and Dave Gottsleben Monday.
After being fast-tracked through the transition process, the Coyote track and field squads will be the first USD representatives to compete in the NCAA postseason. Student-athletes must be in the top 48 of their respective event in the west region to qualify for the NCAA preliminary round on May 26-28 in Eugene, OR, while the finals will be contested on June 8-11 in Des Moines, IA.
USD also returns to Williams Field in Yankton for a second consecutive season when the Coyotes welcome South Dakota State and North Dakota for a double dual on April 9. USD hosted the Great West Conference Outdoor Championships at the same site last May and finished second on both sides.
The rest of USD's 2011 schedule is very similar to the 2010 campaign, as the Coyotes return to many of the same well-known meets. USD starts the outdoor season at the Baldy Castillo Invite hosted by Arizona State on March 18-19, before traveling to the Alabama Relays and Stanford Invite the following weekend. The Coyotes make their annual trip to California on April 14-16 to compete in five meets, including the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays.
Local South Dakota track fans have several chances to catch the Coyotes in action, including in Sioux Falls at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays on May 6-7 and the Vance Butler Invite on April 2. USD heads south for the Sioux City Relays on April 15-16 and visits Brookings for the SDSU Twilight on April 25, before competing at the Drake Relays in Des Moines on April 28-30.
After finishing second the past two seasons, USD will look to take home the title at the GWC Outdoor Championships on May 12-14. Utah Valley will host this year's event in Orem, UT.
