Gregory A. ‘Buckwheat’ Sammelson

Gregory A. �Buckwheat� Sammelson, 46, of Vermillion, died peacefully at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Greg was born April 9, 1964, in Vermillion, to Arthur and A. Irene (Erickson) Sammelson. He graduated from Vermillion High School in 1982 and attended the University of South Dakota. He married Darcy Kovarna on Oct. 1, 2005, in Hinton, IA. He grew up working with his brother Grant and his dad at Sammelson Excavating. He and his brother own Sammelson Brothers Excavating and The Varsity Pub.

Buckwheat was an amazing man! Everywhere you go in Vermillion you see the results of Greg�s strong and gifted hands. Everyone who knew him was a beneficiary of his kindness, generosity, and loyal friendship. He touched the lives and souls of many with his charisma. Buckwheat loved telling stories, softball, hunting, golf, the USD Coyotes and the Oregon Ducks. He was a volunteer firefighter for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Darcy; son, Drew; mother, A. Irene Sammelson; brother, Grant and his dog, Ruger, all of Vermillion. He is also survived by a sister, Diane (John) Wirth of Eugene, OR; in-laws, Larry and Norma Kovarna; brothers-in-law, Tom and Andy Kovarna; nephews, Cody Wirth and James Kovarna; nieces, Ashley and Kali Jo Kovarna; step-daughters, Emily Pogue and Abbey Guenthner and step-grandchildren, Emersyn and Cooper Guenthner.

Funeral service were held at 2 p.m. with viewing and visitation at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, at the Vermillion High School Gymnasium, with burial of ashes at a later date.

A celebration of Greg�s life was held at the Varsity following the service.
