Johanne Irene Jensen

Johanne Irene Jensen peacefully passed away on Dec. 28, 2010, at the Sanford Care Center in Vermillion.

Irene, as she was known to friends and family, was born July 6, 1925, in Denmark to Kristian and Else (Hansen) Pedersen. She was married to Arne Bendix Jensen on August 28, 1948, in Denmark. In October 1948, the two newlyweds embarked on a journey to the United States aboard a coal ship that took them past Ellis Island and docked in Baltimore. From there, they took a Greyhound bus to Cedar Falls, IA, where they raised five children.

A lifelong homemaker, Irene was renowned for her crescent rolls and many of her fine Danish dishes. She cared deeply for her family and even though her memory failed her in her final years, she always remembered her husband, Arne, and her children. Both Irene and Arne were hard working Danes who were proud to be in the United States and believed that the U.S. was the land of opportunity. Her laughter and smile will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Arne, on Feb. 19, 2004. She is survived by her daughter Ilse Myren and husband Ben of Colville, WA; son Eric of Cedar Falls, IA; daughter Irma Iles and husband Derric of Vermillion; son Al and wife Michelle of Missoula, MT; daughter Ilka Daniels and husband Randy of Ankeny, IA; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sister Sigrid Jensen and brother Vagn Pedersen of Cedar Falls, IA; sister Klare Larsen, brother Hans Pedersen, and several in-laws in Denmark; and numerous nieces and nephews in Denmark and elsewhere.

A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, IA. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be directed to Alzheimers Association, 1000 Northwest Avenue, Suite 250, Sioux Falls, SD 57104 or Sanford Care Center, 20 South Plum Street, Vermillion, SD 57069.
