Singing Convention to be held in Vermillion

The Southeastern South Dakota Gospel Singing Convention will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, in the First Baptist Church in Vermillion. The church is located at 101 East Main.

The singing convention is a nondenominational effort to preserve the singing of old familiar hymns and Southern Gospel type songs in four-part harmony.

The convention meets quarterly at various churches of various denominations across the area. The event is free and open to the public. The afternoon will be spent in congregational singing as members of the audience call out their favorite numbers. This afternoon Singspiration  is under the able direction of Alan Ward of Viborg.

Several accomplished pianists are regular followers of the group and provide accompaniment. Anyone wishing to take a turn at playing the piano or directing a song is encouraged to come forward and do so. All in all, it is an afternoon of good singing and good fellowship. The singing convention's theme is found in the words of one of one of the more than 1,000 songs from the book they use: Sing and Be Happy.
