The talent and experience of the state's top-ranked and unbeaten Class "A" girls basketball team eventually took hold Friday night but not until after Vermillion's girls made Parkston work for its 58-47 victory.
"We came out of the gate well," said Coach Nick Mayer, whose Tanagers led 18-14 after the first period. "We struggled a bit in the second quarter while Parkston got hot."
It was 30-21 for the visiting Trojans at the intermission. The Tanagers fought back to within six, 40-34, with one period to play, but Parkston was able to capitalize with clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch.
Lexi Regnerus led VHS with a strong 15-point, seven-rebound performance. In a starting role Claire Jones came through with 11 points. Blair Gilkyson and Kelly Amundson contributed five assists apiece.
For the 8-0 Parkston club Logan Wagner had 15 points and seven boards, McKenzie Weidenbach 12 points and Marie Malloy 12 points and four steals.
After playing at Madison Tuesday and at Lennox last night, the Tanager girls will join the boys in a doubleheader at Elk Point-Jefferson next Tuesday and return home Jan. 21 for another game against Lennox.
