The three Vermillion wrestlers who had placed the previous week at the Sioux Falls Lincoln tournament did themselves one better at the Brandon Valley invitational last Saturday. They all won championships!
Brett Bye at 112 pounds, Lance Burkhart at 140 and Will Mart at heavyweight all won their weight classes at Brandon Valley as the Tanagers as a team placed fifth in total points.
Huron ran away with the team title with 242 points, followed by the host school at 155.5, Sioux Falls Roosevelt at 155, Lincoln at 152.5 and Vermillion at 101. Other teams represented were Kingsbury County with 87 points, O'Gorman with 86 and West Central with 80.
Brenden Raizola earned a strong third-place medal at Brandon in the 125-pound class. Regan Bye placed fifth at 130 pounds, and Dexter Mehlhaf was the fifth-place finisher in the 160-pound division.
Only seven Tanagers made the trip to the Brandon Valley meet, but six of them placed, and all of those six wrestled up to their individual seeds or higher.
Meanwhile, 14 younger wrestlers from grades 6-9 went to a tournament at Mitchell on the same day.
"Many wrestlers went undefeated, and others had their first competitive matches of the year," said middle school wrestling coach Alex Ourada. "The sky is the limit for the Vermillion junior high program."
The varsity Tanagers continue a long period on the road this Saturday when they go back up I-29 yet again, this time for the Harrisburg Invitational. Next Thursday they will compete in a dual at Canton.
