Larry Harvey Lofgren, age 77, of Mitchell, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2011 at his home. Memorial services were 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011 at First Lutheran Church with burial at Black Hills National Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at First Lutheran Church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Will Funeral Chapel.
Larry Harvey Lofgren, son of Harvey E. and Emma G. (Smith) Lofgren, was born Feb. 9, 1934 in Clay County, SD. He attended country schools until 1948 when the family moved to Volin, where Larry graduated in 1953. Larry joined the US Air Force in 1956 and served four years with the Strategic Air Command of Omaha, NE. He was stationed at Altus, OK plus duty in England, Alaska and Guam. While in the military he married Marian Fickbohm. Two daughters, Paula and Glenna were born of that marriage. In 1971 he married Judith Johnson and had one son, Eric.
He worked as service technician for the local natural gas company in Vermillion and he retired in 1996 after 35 years of service. Larry then volunteered his time at the Vermillion Food Pantry, delivered Meals on Wheels, served as a Stephen Minister and on several church boards at Trinity Lutheran. He especially enjoyed fishing, waterskiing, traveling and camping in various types of campers, with the goal of visiting every National Park in the United States.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Judith, Mitchell; one son, Eric (Kimberly) Lofgren, Dimock; two daughters, Paul (Roger) Rose, Pratt, KS, Glenna Shetter, Parker, CO; six grandchildren, Kennedy and Ethan Lofgren, Ryan, Chelsey and Casey Rose, and Thomas Shetter; one brother-in-law, Milton (Joan) Johnson, Howell, MI; two sisters-in-law, JoAnne (Albert) Fisher, Crawford, NE and Carol Johnson, Miami, FL; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Carol; two brothers-in-law, Delmar Macy and Norman Johnson.
