The Tanager girls varsity of the near future completed a 15-4 season last week, breezing through their six February opponents with five wins and one last-second loss.
Bailey Carlson scored 15 points, MacKenzie Huber eight, Josie Huber and Sami Girard six each and Claire Jones five in a 42-28 win over Wagner after Vermillion took a 10-point halftime lead and kept it through the second half.
The night before, Carlson was high scorer with 11, Josie Huber had eight and Girard seven in a 35-31 win at Beresford. The Tanagers rallied from an 18-14 halftime deficit.
It was Harrisburg which beat VHS on a last-second three-point basket for the team's only loss this month. Josie Huber scored 10, Beth Szymonki nine and Carlson eight.
The JV girls trailed at halftime, 19-16; caught up at 27-27 after three quarters and pulled away from West Central in the final period for a 39-31 win. Jones scored 12, Josie Huber seven, MacKenzie Huber six and Carlson five.
Despite falling behind 10-5 after a quarter, the Tanagers outscored Dakota Valley 38-16 the rest of the way in a 43-26 blowout. MacKenzie Huber led VHS with 10, Carlson had nine and Lizzy Bye and Jones seven apiece.
The month began with a 40-26 win over Sergeant Bluff-Luton. Girard had seven points, Syzmonski six, Josie Huber six and Carlson five.
"I believe the success the girls had was directly related to their hard work and dedication during the season as well as the commitment of the girls during the offseason," Coach Lori Jerred said after the final game. "Our kids were in the gym all summer long getting better. We are looking forward to another great season next year."
