VAST swimmers compete at Midwest All Stars Meet in Kansas

Three Vermillion Area Swim Team (VAST) members were selected to the South Dakota All Stars swim team to represent the state at the Midwest All Stars Swim Meet in Lawrence, Kan., on Jan. 15 and 16. 

All three swimmers recorded many personal bests throughout the weekend. The highlight for VAST, and even for the South Dakota team, was a third-place finish by 10-year-old Maddie Lavin in the 100-yard butterfly.  Lavin smashed her personal best time by more than two seconds, scoring the fastest 100-butterfly time in her age group this year in South Dakota and prevailing over her next competitor in the state by nearly five seconds.

VAST Head Coach Mike Moran was selected as the South Dakota All Stars coach for the 10- and-under age group. 

The other two VAST representatives at All Stars were 11-year-old Madisen Martinez and 12-year-old Kyleigh Chandler, who competed for the first time in this meet.  Martinez recorded a personal best time in the 100 breaststroke and represented South Dakota on the �B� Medley Relay.  Chandler picked up best times in the 500 freestyle by nine seconds and dropped five more seconds in the 100 breaststroke.

Madisen Martinez � girls� 11-12 division: 25th in 50 Backstroke (39.81); 24th in 100 Backstroke (1:26.25); 19th in 50 Breaststroke (37.11); 22 in 100 Breaststroke (1:22.77); 10th in 200 Medley Relay – �B� Kyleigh Chandler � girls� 11-12 divison: 25th in 100 Freestyle (1:07.57); 23rd in 500 Freestyle (6:26.36); 24th in 50 Backstroke (38.21); 23rd in 50 Breaststroke (39.80); 24 in 100 Breaststroke (1:24.51); 24th in 50 Butterfly (34.10)
