The Vermillion School District's Special Olympics basketball team competed in Yankton last weekend in their regional tournament, going 2-1 for the day.
Vermillion began the tournament against a very good Brandon Valley team and lost 18-6. Cody Knudsen, Jon Manning and Dylan Rasmussen each scored two points. "We had many opportunities to score, but we were in too much of a hurry and missed a lot of easy shots," said coach Lori Jerred.
In their second game the Tanagers turned things around, beating Brookings, 24-12. Knudsen led the team with eight points. Manning and Rasmussen had four points each, Shari Stammer and Kathy Herrera followed with three each, and Dylan Hudelson scored two.
The Tanagers defeated Parkston, 25-10, in their last game of the day. Herrera led the team with nine points, Knudsen had eight, Rasmussen four, and Hudelson and Manning two each.
Robbie Johnson-Cheeseman and Shaylene Davis led the defensive attack, causing many problems for their opponents. Other members of the Vermillion team are Raya O'Neil and James Solberg.
The Tanagers will next be in action March 11-12 at the state tournament in Yankton.
"We showed great improvement throughout the tournament and are looking forward to a successful state tournament," Jerred said. She was assisted in coaching the team by Jen Law and Mary Hulac.
