Mary Frances Lyle, age 93, of Yankton died early Sunday, March 6, 2011 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton. Mass of Christian Burial was 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 8 at Avera Sister James Care Center Gathering Place with Msgr. Carlton Hermann officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, rural Burbank, at approximately 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
Visitations began at 5 p.m., Monday at Avera Sister James Care Center Gathering Place with a Wake service and rosary at 7 p.m. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the Gathering Place. The Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, is in charge of services.
Mary Frances was born Nov. 17, 1917 in Union County, South Dakota, the daughter of William M. and Lillian (Ruddell) Lyle.
Mary received her education in graduate school at Iowa State, the University of Wisconsin, and 35 months at USDA in Washington, DC. After receiving her education she was professionally employed as a home economist on the county, state, and federal level, until retirement on Jan. 31, 1978. Upon her retirement she moved to Yankton and lived at the Majestic Bluffs retirement center until her death.
Mary Fran was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Church, the CDA, AHEA, SDHEA, AAUW, PI LAMBA THETA, DELTA KAPPA GAMA, BPW, OMI ROM NU, PHI U, and held offices on the Extension Committee on the Organization and Policy of the Land Grant College and University, NC Representative 1964-67, past president of the St. Thomas More Guild, past president Delta Kappa Gama, past secretary and legislative chairman, SDEA board member, United Fund and Cancer Society, Secretary for National Fraternity, and ESP.
She is survived by one brother, Mark D. Lyle of Des Moines, IA; and two sisters, Barbara (John) Bernard of Vermillion, and Sister Wilma Lyle O.S.B. of Yankton.
Mary Fran was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Marshall, William, and Morris; and two sisters, Elizabeth and Phyllis.
