Five Vermillion Area Swim Team (VAST) members won individual events at the Tri State Championships last weekend at the South Sioux City YMCA. The team also brought home seven high-point awards.
Maddie Lavin was once again the star in the 9- to 10-year-girls category, winning all five individual events at the championship. This automatically made her the high-point champion in that age group meaning that she accumulated the highest number of points based on how she placed in all five individual events.
Hunter Lavin and Megan Muriuki both won the 25-breaststroke event in the 8-and-under age groups for boys and girls respectively, along with the high-point second-place award in that category.
In the 15-to-18-year-old girls category, VASTs Kylie Martin had a great day as well, winning the 100-butterfly and the 100-breatstroke events, and placing second in her age group for high point.
Madisen Martinez was the winner of the 50-breaststroke event in the category for girls between the ages of 11 and 12. She scored fifth in total points in her age group. In the same category, Lexie Malimanek grabbed the third-place high-points award, and Kyleigh Moran scored fourth in high points.
Coach Mike Moran said he and the rest of the coaching staff from VAST are very proud of all the swimmers achievements, and everyone is looking forward to the remaining events in the championship part of the winter season.
