Vera Johnson, 88, of Vermillion, passed away Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011 at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.
Vera Mayer was born March 8, 1922 in Wakonda, to Frank and Esther (Hansen) Mayer. She graduated from Wakonda High School and attended college in Racine, WI. She married Delmar �Bud� Johnson on July 11, 1945 in Kentucky while he was in the service.
Vera was a homemaker until her children were grown, then she and Bud managed apartments until moving back to Wakonda. She worked as a waitress at the Sundown Lounge until her retirement.
Vera was an Eagles Mother of the Year in 2005, member of the VFW Auxiliary in Vermillion and Wakonda American Legion, and a Past Member of the Dakota Hospital Auxiliary.
She is survived by her three sons, Gary (Julie) of Wakonda, Ron of Vermillion and Greg (Nora Ludwig) of Burbank; two daughters, Cheryl Seney of Burbank and Janet (Don Brose) Carlisle of Alcester; a sister, Marilyn Lindblom of Beresford; 26 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren.
Vera was preceded in death by an infant son, Gerald; her parents, her husband, Bud; two brothers, Pete and Warren Mayer; a son, Michael; and two great-grandsons.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 2 at the United Methodist Church in Wakonda, with burial in the Union Cemetery, rural Wakonda. Visitation was from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 1 at the Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion. Online condolences and obituary; hansenfuneralhome.com.
