Video contest ‘inspires’ student to first place finish

Andrea Roberts, an English education major at The University of South Dakota, is the winner of the Network for Excellence in Teaching (NExT) Online Video Contest. NExT is a partnership of the Bush Foundation and 14 higher education institutions in the upper Midwest, including USD.

The video contest, launched last November, invited people to tell their stories about teaching. Many came from high school and college students from all over the country from states such as Minnesota, North Carolina, California and Alabama, who were inspired by an exceptional educator.

It didnt take me very long to come up with the subject of why I wanted to teach, said Roberts, a Lawton, IA native. Ive always loved kids and I do like knowing that I will be a role model to them. They are a huge part of the inspiration of why I want to teach.

Roberts, a freshman, created a 33 second video stating why she wanted to be a teacher. Her video, The Kids Are My Inspiration, included clips of her diverse experiences working with youths. She said creating the video took time with writing, planning and a lot of video-taping.

I had help from a lot of family and friends in both the making of the video and their support of the video in the competition, added Roberts, the daughter of Paul and Beth Roberts of Lawton.

Sponsored by the Bush Foundation, Roberts video was among 10 finalists voted on by visitors to the contest Web site. The Bush Foundation then selected the winning videos from these finalists. For winning the contest, Roberts receives a $1,000 gift card to the retailer of her choice. To view her winning entry, please go to http://www.nextprogramcontest.org/contests/showentry/677674
