John Boerema, 85, of Vermillion, formerly of Yankton, passed away Thursday, March 31, 2011, at the Wakonda Heritage Manor.
John was born Dec. 7, 1925, in DeSmet to Jake and Alice (Riepma) Boerema. He married Delores Thornton on Nov. 3, 1957, in Yankton. They then moved to Vermillion where he spent more than 50 years in the community. During his time in Vermillion John, who was a tireless and steadfast worker, was a meat inspector for Dean Packing until the effects of a childhood battle with polio caused him to retire. John was a devoted family man who loved spending time with his children and grandchildren as well as spending time on the water with a fishing pole in his hand.
John is survived by his daughter, Lisa (Joe) Brown of Piedmont; his son, Larry (Patty) Boerema of Yankton; and his sisters, Gertrude (Jim) Tichy of Meckling, Alice (Eddie) Ellis of Yankton, and Edna Hensley of Santa Clara, CA; his grandchildren, Michael and Brittany Boerema, and Christopher and Kayla Brown.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Jake and Alice Boerema; his brother, Ike Boerema; and his wife, Delores (Thornton) Boerema.
The memorial service was held at 10 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service, on Monday, April 4, 2011, at the Kober Funeral Home in Vermillion.
Placement of the cremated remains will be at a later date.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Kober Funeral Home in Vermillion.
