Roger Kevin Nelson, 50, of Orange City, IA, formerly of Vermillion, passed away at his home.
His memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 8 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion. Visitation was on Thursday April 7 from 5 to 7 p.m.at the Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion.
Roger was born on May 13, 1960 in Sioux Falls to Eugene and Loretta (Lorenz) Nelson. From the beginning, Roger had a love for his family and the farm life. Working the land, raising animals, and helping his two older brothers were some of the childhood memories he cherished. After being raised on the farm and attending Parker Public Schools, Roger attended SDSU for a short while before accepting a position with the Vermillion Broadcaster. He continued his publishing career at Alkota and other publishing companies.
He married Cindy Huber on July 31, 1982 in Vermillion. In this union, they raised two children, Ryan and Brooke. Some of his favorite pastimes with his children were playing and coaching sports, attending Minnesota Pro games and camping.
Roger is survived by his mother, Loretta Nelson of Vermillion; son, Ryan (Hilary) Nelson and grandson, Blake of Devils Lake, ND; daughter, Brooke Nelson of Minneapolis, MN; brothers, Rich (Mona) Nelson of Overland Park, KS, and Dave (Amy) Nelson of Vermillion; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Nelson, and two special uncles.
