USD takes double-dual

While other sports at the University of South Dakota await the renewal of a once-heated rivalry, the competition on the track is already going strong.

South Dakota's Alexa Duling sets the pace in the women's 100-meter hurdles during a double-dual with South Dakota State and North Dakota, Saturday at Williams Field in Yankton. (James D. Cimburek/P&D)

Saturdays double dual meet was proof of that.

In what was a close battle all day, the USD mens and womens track teams combined for a tight 201-195 dual victory over rival South Dakota State at the meet held at Williams Field in Yankton.

Both USD and SDSU also defeated North Dakota in the double dual format, which counted as two Division I meets for each school.

But the real showdown was between the Coyotes and Jackrabbits.

Its always nice to beat State, USD sophomore Alexa Duling said, with a wide grin. Theres nothing more a Coyote wants then to beat a Jack.

And honestly, it means a little more when our relays win, because thats more of the team part of the whole thing, she added. But well definitely take it.

On the womens side, USD overcame a one-point deficit with two events left to beat SDSU 105-90. The Coyotes won nine events, with SDSU winning five.

The margin was closer on the mens side, as the Jacks beat the Coyotes 105-96. SDSU claimed first place in nine events, with USD winning eight.

Again displaying a balanced effort on the track, the Coyote women had only one double-winner Duling in the hurdle races.

The defending Great West Conference outdoor champion in the 400-meter hurdles, Duling repeated in that event (1:005.52), but she said the bigger accomplishment was winning the 100 hurdles (14.48).

I was really surprised with how I did in the 100, she said later. I didnt get in a full warmup, so I got nervous. Sometimes that gets into my head if I feel like I wasnt completely ready.

Already with the top Great West clocking in the 100, Duling out-distanced teammate Haley Juhnke by two seconds in winning the 400.

My focus all along was to run a better curve on the back-stretch, Duling said. I wanted to hit that turn faster then usual, so (Saturday) was a good learning experience.

In the case of USD sophomore pole vaulter Bethany Buell, she was ready to move beyond the learning phase and into the jumping-higher phase.

Buell, who redshirted last years outdoor season, won the womens pole vault with a 13 feet, 1.5 inch jump leading a USD contingent that went 1-2-3-4.

It was kind of the same story for a couple weeks, Buell said. I was jumping well; I felt good, but the marks didnt really show it. Once you start missing, you dont have very many chances to keep going.

The Coyote women also got individual titles on the track from Ashley Sveum in the 400-meter dash (57.48), Emma Erickson in the 800 (2:10.87), Carol Miller in the 1,500 (4:43.71) and Kristin Steffen in the 3,000 steeplechase (11:42.24).

In the field events, USDs Jasmine Mosley won the shot put (45-4.5) and Kenna Wolter was first in the triple jump (39-1.25).

The Coyote men were also just as balanced, with only one double winner Cody Linder in the jumps.

Faced with an opportunity to not only compete against a current conference opponent (North Dakota) but also a future one (SDSU), the Coyotes held their own, according to mens coach Dave Gottsleben said.

Our kids learned a lot and competed very well, Gottsleben said. SDSU is a second-place team in the Summit, and were finding out where we need to be.

Were excited for the future, he added. Hopefully, our guys saw where we need to get better so we can beat the Jacks next time we see them.

Linder won the long jump (22-1) and triple jump (46-3.5), while Tane Owens won the pole vault (15-5) USD went 1-2-3 in that event.

On the track, Matt Kerswill won the 100 (10.74), Casey Shade won the 800 (1:52.53), Ethan Marquardt was first in the 3,000 (8:29.80) and Jeffrey Mettler won the steeplechase (9:14.41) in his first try at that event.

Cody certainly stood out with some nice jumps, Gottsleben said. And our sprinters are definitely coming along. I was happy to see Matt (Kerswill) win the 100.

In what was USDs only official home meet of the season, the Coyotes return to Williams Field a year after hosting the Great West Outdoor Championships last May.

We owe a huge thanks to Yankton for letting us come over to host this, Gottsleben said. Otherwise, our kids wouldnt have hosted an outdoor meet this year. And plus, this is just a phenomenal facility; one of the best in our region.
