On April 6, three performing groups of the VHS Music Department were awarded Division I ratings at the SDHSAA Music Region I Large Group music contest. The groups performing were Women�s Choir, Concert Choir, and Symphonic Winds. Women�s Choir performed �Prepare the Hymn� by Handel, and �Reuben, Reuben� arranged by Singh. Concert Choir performed �Sicut Cervus� by Palestrina, �Jamacian Market Place� by Farrow, and �Dance A Cachuca Fandago, Bolero� from �The Gondoliers� by Gilbert & Sullivan.
Symphonic Winds� program included, �Ascend� by Samuel R. Hazo, �As Summer Was Just Beginning,� by Larry D. Daehn, and �Torch of Liberty� by Karl L. King. Director of Choirs at Vermillion High School is Trisha Fisher and Director of Bands is John Alpers.
South Dakota High School Activities Association holds its state music contests in five regions across South Dakota. Vermillion belongs to Music Region I and is proud to host the Region�s Instrumental Solo, Ensemble and Large Group contests each year at Vermillion High School.
Vermillion Standard Time awarded third place
Vermillion High School�s Vermillion Standard Time jazz band was awarded third place in Level II at the Northeast Jazz Festival. The competition was held at Northeast Community College in Norfolk, NE on Tuesday, March 29. Bennett Lamplot, piano, also received an outstanding soloist award. Director of Vermillion Standard Time is John Alpers.
All School Band Extravaganza Tuesday night
Vermillion Schools Music Department has announced that the 2011 All School Band Extravaganza will be presented at the Vermillion High School gymnasium on Tuesday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. The concert will feature the sixth grade, seventh grade and eighth grade concert bands, VMS Jazz Co, Vermillion Standard Time and Vermillion Symphonic Winds. The concert will conclude with a mass band selection. Music directors for the concert are Becky Rider and John Alpers. Admission is free and everyone is invited to attend.
