Vickrey to step down in July

The University of South Dakota announced that Barry R. Vickrey, J.D., will resign as dean of the School of Law effective July 21 to become a member of the full-time faculty.

It has been a privilege to serve USD and the legal profession of South Dakota as dean of the law school for 18 years, Vickrey stated. Professionally, I look forward to the challenges and opportunities of fulfilling the teaching, research, and service responsibilities of a full-time faculty member. Personally, I plan to use the summers and other breaks in the academic calendar to spend more time with my family, and especially my two grandchildren.

Vickrey has served as a professor and dean of the School of Law since July 19, 1983. Before coming to USD, he was on the faculty of the University of North Dakota School of Law for 11 years, including five years as associate dean. He was on the staff of the American Bar Association for five years, serving as assistant to the president-elect/president and director of the Division of Professional Education. Between college and law school, he was a staff aide on the Policy Planning Staff of the Governor of Tennessee.

Vickrey earned a B.A. in history from Vanderbilt University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He also received his J.D. from Vanderbilt and has been admitted to the practice of law in Tennessee and South Dakota.
