If the regional track meet went off as scheduled Thursday at Lennox, all is in readiness for next week's state track meets on Friday and Saturday, May 27-28.
Class "A" participants, including Vermillion's qualifiers, will go to Madison on Friday and join the other classes for the final day Saturday at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.
The Tanagers and fellow Big 8 Conference athletes concluded their regular-season schedules Monday when the conference held its championship meet at Madison. It had been postponed from last Thursday because of � what else? � the weather.
Madison swept boys and girls divisions of the Big 8 meet. On the girls' side the Lady Bulldogs were followed by West Central, Harrisburg, Vermillion in fourth place with 31 points and Lennox. The boys' standings showed West Central, Lennox, Harrisburg and Vermillion with 28 team points trailing Madison in that order.
Vermillion claimed four individual conference champions. Blair Gilkyson won the 1600-meter run in a time of 5:46.5. Mackenzie Huber captured pole vault honors with a best jump of 8'0". Beth Szymonski won the shot put at a distance of 35'0". In boys' events Will Mart was the discus champion at 145'8".
The Tanagers' boys 1600-meter relay team also won its event in a 3:31.4 clocking.
