Tanager athletes qualify for state meet at Region 4A track competition

Vermillions Will Mart placed Mart's seventh in the shot put at the Region 4A meet in Lennox last Thursday with a throw of 43'9 3/4". He qualifed for the this weekends state meet in the discus, hurling the platter 161'11", a personal-best distance.

Vermillion added individual qualifiers in three events plus three relay teams to their state track meet delegation as the Tanagers competed in the Region 4A meet in Lennox last Thursday.

Adding the results there to those who had qualified earlier in the season by meeting height, time or distance standards, Vermillion has spots in 11 girls events and eight boys events in the Class "A" portion of the state classic. The Tanagers will join other "A" qualifiers in Madison on Friday, then those who are still alive will join the "AA" and "B" finalists for one grand finale at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls on Saturday.

The Tanager girls placed third in the regional field with 89 points and claimed three individual regional champions. Valerie Moos improved over her season's best time in the 100-meter hurdles by nearly a full second and won her event in :15.6. Beth Syzmonski dominated the discus as she has done all season with a winning throw of 126'10." Mackenzie Huber pole-vaulted 8'6" to win the gold medal in that event.

The Tanager girls also got second-place finishes from Blair Gilkyson in the 1600-meter run in 5:40.8 and from three relay foursomes the 4×200 team in 1:52.0, the 4×400 team in 4:17.6 and the medley team in 4:45.2. First- and second-placers in individual and relay events automatically qualified for the state meet.

In his last chance to do so, Aaron Ruhaak qualified for state in the 400-meter dash with a second-place time of :52.4. Will Mart did the same thing in the discus, hurling the platter 161'11", a personal-best distance. Four Tanager relay teams also placed second the 4×200 squad in 1:32.9, the 4×400 team in 3:30.7, the 4×800 team in 8:56.0 and the medley team in 3:57.1. For the 3200-meter team it was a case of qualifying in their last chance to do so while the other three foursomes had qualified during the regular season.

The Vermillion girls lineup for the state meet will include Gilkyson in the 800, 1600 and 3200; Szymonski in the shot put and discus; Huber in the pole vault; Moos in the 100-meter hurdles, and the 400, 800, 1600 and medley relay teams. In addition to the girls going for individual events, other female athletes listed on the VHS contestant sheet are Christine Epping, Courtney Johnson, Megan Olson, Paige Olson, Janani Ragathoman, Abreuanna Raizola and Carlee Sorensen.

The Tanager boys entry list at state will include Cody Olson in the 100 and 200, Mart in the discus, Ruhaak in the 400 and the 800, 1600, 3200 and medley relay teams. Other male athletes on the entry list are Tanner Anderson, Jayce Huska, Austin Krier, Anthony Leber, Colin Olson, Brenden Raizola, J.T. Sorensen and Carson Sullivan.

In other girls events at the regional which earned team points, the Vermillion 4×100 team placed third in :52.2, and Szymonski was third in the shot put at 33'9 1/4". Abreuanna Raizola placed sixth and Emma Lunning seventh in the 400 in respective times of 1:07.40 and 1:07.50. Epping was fourth in the 200 in :28.30, and Moos placed eighth in the 300-meter hurdles in :53.70. The VHS 3200-meter relay team placed fifth in 11:45.50.

Third-place medals at the regional were earned on the boys' side by Cody Olson in the 200 in :23.70 and Krier in the 800 in 2:08.70. Other Tanager performances which earned team points were Tanner Anderson's fourth in the 1600 in 4:57.50; Nathan Ford's fourth in the 3200 in 11:51.90; Nick Jensen's fifth and Mart's seventh in the shot put at 44'7 1/2" and 43'9 3/4", respectively; Alex Robertson's sixth in the high jump at 5'5"; Andrew Kost's sixth in the 300-meter hurdles in :46.50 and seventh in the 110-meter hurdles in :17.40; Huska's seventh in 2:18.50 and Sullivan's eighth in 2:18.70, both in the 800; Brenden Raizola's eighth in the 200 in :24.50, and the 400-meter relay team's eighth in :47.90.

3200: Morgan Hower ninth, 14:12.30.

300-meter hurdles: Carlee Sorensen ninth, :53.90; Mackenzie Huber 13th, :56.80.

Shot put: Alexa Mockler 20th, 26'2 1/4"; Latrissa Necklace 21st, 25'5 3/4".

Discus: Lauren Leichtnam 19th, 72'1 1/2".

Triple jump: Munger ninth, 34'4 1/2".
